10 x 9 cm
Provenance
Private collection, FranceGiambattista Tiepolo, one of the Venetian masters of the 18th century, is renowned for his monumental frescoes and his virtuoso use of color and light. Born in 1696 in Venice, Tiepolo quickly gained fame for his dynamic compositions and his biblical and mythological scenes. This red chalk drawing, titled Study for a Fresco, measures 10 by 8 cm and perfectly illustrates the artist's finesse and technical mastery.
The work shows a figure sketched with an economy of means that nevertheless conveys remarkable expressiveness. The lines are delicate yet assured, capturing an attitude and emotion in just a few strokes. The red chalk, a medium often used for preparatory studies, allows Tiepolo to play with nuances and shadows with great subtlety.
This study is valuable not only for its artistic quality but also because it offers insight into Tiepolo's creative process. Catherine Loisel, a recognized specialist in Tiepolo's work, has confirmed the authenticity of this drawing and dated it to the early years of the artist, highlighting its importance in Tiepolo's stylistic evolution.
At a time when the late Baroque was gradually giving way to the Rococo, Tiepolo established himself through his ability to fuse the two styles, creating works imbued with grandeur and lightness. Among his notable contemporaries are Giovanni Battista Piazzetta and Sebastiano Ricci, both influenced by the same quest for light and movement.
This study, though small in size, is an eloquent testament to Tiepolo's virtuosity and his innovative approach to fresco, a medium he helped to renew and elevate to new artistic heights.
